Signs Someone Is A Great Real Estate Negotiator

A lot of people often wonder what makes the difference between a fantastic real estate agent and an average one. While there are many differences between the two, I believe one of the fundamental differences is the ability to negotiate.

Professionals involved in real estate must negotiate. In every deal, there are usually at least four people involved – the buyer, seller, buyeragent, and sellers agent. The fiduciary duty each agent has to their respective client means that any negotiated deal must work for both parties. If either the buyer or seller later regrets the transaction, that means one of the agents hasnt done their job.

So how can you tell that you have an agent that is an excellent negotiator – someone who will fight to protect your interests and strike a fair deal? Here are five signs:

1. Experience. Negotiation is not a skill that you can read in a textbook and master. It takes many years to develop. If you hire someone who has been an agent for a while, chances are they can negotiate.

2. Confident speakers. The ability to speak well sways people. If you feel like your agent speaks well, they can probably negotiate well.

3. Strong knowledge of contractual details. An agent that can tell you the ins and outs of the various real estate contracts is also likely to know how to negotiate based on those points.

4. Picking smart battles. Asking for a $10,000 credit for a visible blemish in the paint is not an intelligent battle to fight. Asking for money off the sales price to fix an unexpected positive termite inspection is a battle worth fighting.

5. They use information well. Sometimes a little legwork goes a long way to a fantastic deal. If your agent digs up that extra info, they can usually deal well.

Those are some signs, but not all, of course. In the end, you want an agent that will negotiate the best deal for you!
